#8 TED Talk

The shared experience of absurdity

Charlie Todd

Three words I learned from the talk:

-rape (v.) to force someone to have sex when they are unwilling, using violence or threatening behaviour
It's difficult to understand what causes a man to rape.

-anonymously (adj.)  made or done by someone whose name is not known or not made public
Police said an anonymous caller warned that a bomb was about to go off.

-prank (n.) a trick that is intended to be funny but not to cause harm or damage
When I was at school we were always playing pranks on our teachers.

My comments on the talk :
We don't have too much time on our hands, so we can occasionally choose to spend it in an unusual way. We will like to take a rest and have fun, but when we grow up we even don’t know how to ‘play’.
I like the point of Improv Everywhere. We can do something make other laugh, even not everybody's going to like everything you do.

#7 English song

Original: Clean Bandit feat. Zara Larsson
Cover: Angelica Hale
Cover, Angelica Hale (born July 31, 2007) is an American child singer from Atlanta, Georgia. She competed in the 12th season of America's Got Talent, where she became the runner-up.
"Symphony" is a song by British classical crossover band Clean Bandit featuring Swedish singer Zara Larsson. It is taken as the third single from their upcoming second album. The song was also released as the sixth single from Larsson's second studio album, So Good (2017). It is a classical-pop song. The song has a prominent use of strings and arrangements of "electronic" percussion and "xylophone" style synthesiser lines. It is a dramatic ballad about someone who is in love and wants to be part of his/her "symphony".

----- Lyric -----

I’ve been hearing symphonies
Before all I heard was silence
A rhapsody for you and me
And every melody is timeless

Life was stringing me along
Then you came and you cut me loose
Was solo singing on my own
Now I can’t find the key without you

And now your song is on repeat
And I’m dancin' on to your heartbeat
And when you’re gone, I feel incomplete
So if you want the truth

I just wanna be part of your symphony
Will you hold me tight and not let go?
Symphony
Like a love song on the radio
Will you hold me tight and not let go?

I’m sorry if it’s all too much
Every day you’re here, I’m healing
And I was runnin' outta luck
I never thought I’d find this feeling

And now your song is on repeat
And I’m dancin' on to your heartbeat
And when you’re gone, I feel incomplete
So if you want the truth

I just wanna be part of your symphony
Will you hold me tight and not let go?
Symphony
Like a love song on the radio
Symphony
Like a love song on the radio
Will you hold me tight and not let go?

------  Words I learned  ------

1. silence (n.)
a period without any sound; complete quiet

2. rhapsody (n.)
[music] a piece of music that has no formal structure and expresses powerful feelings

3. stringing (n.)
(a piece of) strong, thin rope made by twisting very thin threads together, used for fastening and tying things

------ Why I like this song? ------

The lyric express feelings directly and vocabulary is not so hard that lots of people can understand quickly and easily. The original one is a little bit relaxed, but cover singer Angelica Hale sings more emotion deeply moving me. A little girl can makes her dream come true, why can’t I?
